HYACINTH MACAW (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus)
With its 100 cm (39 inches) in length and a wingspan of 140 cm (55 inches), the Hyacinth Macaw is not only the largest macaw but also the largest parrot in the world.
Like all macaws, the Hyacinth Macaw lives in the Neotropical region (Central and South America). It is particularly found in certain areas of Brazil and Bolivia.
The Hyacinth Macaw belongs to the genus Anodorhynchus, which includes two other species: the Indigo Macaw and the Glaucous Macaw (which is extremely rare, almost extinct). The other two species in the genus are very similar to the Hyacinth Macaw, but they can be distinguished by slight differences in their feather coloration. Despite being 70 to 80 cm (28 to 31 inches) long, they are smaller than the Hyacinth Macaw.
The Hyacinth Macaw stands out for being almost entirely covered in a stunning electric blue color (except for the black feathers on the wings). Its large beak is slate-colored, and around the mandible, there are two patches of bright yellow bare skin. There is also a periocular area of yellow bare skin around the eye.
The Hyacinth Macaw is a parrot species that is highly endangered. The main reasons for its endangered status are habitat loss due to deforestation for agriculture and livestock farming, as well as the illegal trade of exotic species, as the Hyacinth Macaw is highly sought after as a pet.
