CREATURES OF THE GELATINOUS WORLD 3 – MEDITERRANEAN JELLYFISH

We have reached the conclusion of this series dedicated to creatures of the gelatinous world, created for the #microceano exhibition, an initiative by the protected area @ampmiramare in collaboration with @ogs_it and @wwfitalia.

The protagonists of this final piece, you probably already recognized them: they are the #jellyfish that have accompanied us in these weeks, and we have discovered their secrets in the last posts.

So here we find the pale and ethereal Aurelia aurita and Rhizostoma pulmo, which look like they have just returned from a trip to the moon.

We catch sight of the Caribdea marsupialis with all its exotic charm.

We are enchanted by the beauty of the Cotylorhiza tuberculata, the Mediterranean Cassiopeia, with its beautiful colors.

And finally, we admire, albeit from a safe distance, the “stingers”: the luminous Pelagia noctiluca, with its iridescent purple hues, and the elegant Chrysaora hysoscella, whose hypnotic patterns on the bell transport us to another dimension.

Jellyfish, although a visual delight, can have their “harmful” side, not so much related to their sting but more to their ecological role. During blooms, their numbers increase disproportionately, causing imbalances in the marine food web. While blooms are a natural and spontaneous phenomenon, our actions can worsen the consequences of these events, particularly climate change (which promotes blooms) and the indiscriminate fishing that eliminates the few predators that can reduce the jellyfish population.

All the jellyfish depicted here can be found in the Mediterranean and are depicted to scale (in the original exhibit, they are even depicted at life size). With this choice, I wanted to give the viewer the opportunity to interact with these animals as if encountering them in nature, breaking down the barrier of prejudice towards these fascinating creatures, often seen as a threat.

This artwork, along with others from #microceano, will remain on display until June 20th.
