I Dinosauri: la loro evoluzione e la loro scoperta

The word “dinosaur” was coined by Sir Richard Owen in 1842. It derives from two Greek terms: deinòs, meaning “terrible,” and sauròs, meaning “lizard.” Sir Owen could hardly have imagined it at the time, but by creating the word dinosaur, he also created, in the human mind, a conceptual space for an entirely new category of creatures, those that lived in a distant past and are now extinct.
Until that moment, beings belonging to a lost and ancient world were confined to what we would now describe as folklore. Dragons, griffins, mermaids, giants, and other mythic beings were believed to have inhabited the Earth in ancient times, swept away by the Flood in Christian tradition or vanquished by heroic demigods in Greek, Sumerian, or Egyptian mythology, to name only a few examples.
With the creation of the figure of the dinosaur, those fantastic creatures of Earth’s remote past suddenly took on physical form. They became not only more tangible and real but also a powerful reference point, first within scientific culture, and later within popular imagination.
In this seven-hour seminar devoted to dinosaurs, we will embark on a journey retracing the evolutionary history of these extraordinary reptiles. We will begin with foundational questions such as “What is a dinosaur?” and “What is the Mesozoic?”, and progressively deepen our understanding through key scientific discoveries that have illuminated their anatomy, evolution, and biology.
We will examine up close such creatures as the gigantic Brontosaurus, the fearsome Allosaurus and Megalosaurus, and the feathered Velociraptor, Sinosauropteryx, and Yutyrannus. Our journey will conclude with the extinction of the “terrible lizards” and the survival, to this very day, of their only true descendants: the birds.

La parola “Dinosauro” è stata coniata da Sir Richard Owens nel 1842. Proviene dai due termini greci “deinòs”, terribile e “sauròs”, lucertola. Sir Owens, al tempo probabilmente non se lo sarebbe mai immaginato, ma con la crezione della parola dinosauro ha creato nella mente umana lo spazio per una nuova categorie di creature. Precisamente quelle vissute in un tempo remoto e ormai estinte.
Fino a quel momento le creature appartenenti ad un passato ormai perduto erano quelle che oggi relegheremmo nel “folklore”. Draghi, Grifoni, Sirene, Giganti ed altre creature erano le mitiche creature che avevano abitato la Terra del passato e che erano state spazzate dal Diluvio nella tradizione cristiana o avevano trovato la morte grazie a qualche eroico semidio, come nella mitologia greca, sumerica o egizia per esempio.
Con la creazione della figura del “Dinosauro”, improvvisamente quelle creature fantastiche, appartenenti al passato remoto della Terra, si sono incarnate, diventando così non solo più reali, ma anche un punto di riferimento fortissimo nella cultura scientifica, in principio e popolare, in seguito.
In questo seminario di 7 ore dedicato ai Dinosauri, partiremo per un viaggio ripercorrendo la storia evolutiva di questi incredibili rettili, iniziando con domande semplici come “che cos’è un dinosauro” oppure “che cos’è il Mesozoico”, andando sempre più in profondità con la conoscenza, grazie ad alcune delle scoperte scientifiche che ci hanno permesso di comprenderne l’anatomia, l’evoluzione e la biologia.
Vedremo da vicino creature come i giganteschi Brontosauri o i feroci Allosauri e Megalosauri o i piumati Velociraptor, Sinosauropteryx e Yutyrannus. Il nostro viaggio si concluderà con l’estinzione delle “terribili lucertole” e della sopravvivenza, fino ai giorni nostri degli ultimi veri dinosauri: gli uccelli.
