Are you looking for high quality scientific illustrations for your projects?

Hi, I’m Simone Zoccante an Italian natural history illustrator and paleoartist, with a deep-rooted knowledge in zoology, natural history, and paleontology.

Creating a functional and compelling scientific illustration is not an easy task, as it requires the ability to convert data, analysis, and studies into images that are easily understandable, aesthetically pleasing, and can help the reader visualize the expressed concepts.

Therefore, to create an excellent scientific illustration, I combine the skills from the scientific world with those from the field of visual design that I have acquired throughout years of study and work.

I specialize in vertebrate scientific illustration. I not only depict living vertebrates but, being a paleoartist, I also reconstruct the appearance of extinct animals and environments.

To create a correct and accurate scientific illustration, I usually study numerous scientific papers, and I enjoy engaging in interactions and exchanging information with researchers.

WHAT I OFFER FOR A SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION COMMISSION

1. REALISTIC AND DETAILED REPRESENTATIONS

THE FIRST RULE for a correct scientific illustration is to be faithful to reality.

Scientific illustrations are used in non-fiction literature to visually depict data and analyses presented in scientific studies or to illustrate structural and functional anatomical aspects, as well as to provide visual elements for distinguishing and recognizing a particular species.

The illustrator must be able to extract from a large quantity of references the “recurrent standard elements” that allow for the representation of a specific animal or plant species, eliminating the physical variations of each individual.

The details of the depicted organism must be well-defined and represented in a plausible manner in terms of colors, materials, and textures that the organism exhibits in nature.

2. DETAILED AND READABLE LAYOUT

A CLEAR AND READABLE LAYOUT is extremely important for a scientific illustration.

The reader should be able to understand the illustration even without the need for extensive text or prior knowledge of the subject. Infographics are the best tool to achieve this goal.

By using a combination of balanced composition, visual hierarchy, element schematization, and spatial organization, a scientific illustration incorporated into an infographic allows the reader to easily assimilate complex information presented in the text, as if it was a visual summary.

3. MUCH INFORMATION CONDENSED IN ONE IMAGE

SYNTHESIS AND ESSENTIALITY are two significant characteristics for a scientific illustration.

Mastering these two features allows the illustrator to condense a large amount of complex information into a single comprehensible image.

This type of skill is especially required when representing a natural environment with typical species immersed in it or when illustrating the various stages of a phenomenon.

An illustration with many elements should not be a jumble of subjects inserted randomly. The rules of aesthetics and composition also apply to this type of depiction, and the subjects should be placed with the ultimate goal of achieving a visually satisfying image.

4. COMPELLING AND UNIQUE DESIGN

We have examined the rules for creating a correct scientific illustration, and now let’s discover my secret ingredient to MAKE IT MEMORABLE.

A unique and captivating design is not typically associated with scientific representation

However, it is true that our minds enjoy being entertained. Incorporating a touch of visual entertainment when communicating scientific knowledge is an excellent way not only to help readers remember what they have read more easily but also to nourish their minds with a visual design that enhances their engagement with the presented topics.
